Several people at CKA have military experience, others are informed about the Canadian military and so I'm starting a thread on what Canada's military future is. That is what missions should we be equiping for? We have some money now, the ideas on future threats ranges broadly and so what should our national role be. For example what would an "expidetionary force" look like? Any ideas on what Canada can and cannot do that you can express in 10 lines or less.

I think Afghanistan will be the focus passed 2014, so equipping rhw Army for that role is still their priority. After that, one can see Peacekeeping poitically attractive to get some international street cred back with the UN (bullshit I think as Afghanistan is where street cred is at) Korea continues to be a topic of interest and may yet prove to be the next theatre.
The Navy is re-equipping - very slowly. All the bluster about the arctic has yet to materialize with ships. The slushbreakers will not be heavily armed, so they will be rather useless for anything but OGD. Blue water ops will still be important but littoral warfare will not.
F35s for the airforce, which I disagree with, will be their focus.
Sadly, it all seems rather aimless.

Time for a proper study and a Defence White Paper.

No, he isn't. There would be a greater sense of "focus" as far as procurement goes across the board if there was one.

I think if we kept them home, capitalism would look a lot better in North America. Save the money, there's a lot of problems around here.

I don't see why we need to start becoming a member of the World Police.
We've had a war for nearly a decade, can't we cool our jets before blazing guns through Korea?

I think the last one was 2001, a lot of things have happened and the end of combat ops in Afghanistan would be the perfect time to look at the CF, where it's going, procurement, capabilities etc. A Defence White Paper is well overdue.

But seriously, I thought a young communist like yourself would be all over military excursions. Poland, Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Afghanistan come to mind. Also South Korea, South Viet Nam, Tibet courtesy of our Asian communists. I guess military excursions are only bad when western nations indulge.

A White paper is all well and good but the Canadian public will not stand for the final dollar figure that is needed to get all 3 services up to par. The navy has been neglected for some time and ships are not cheap! Likewise with the new jets the airforce wants. Even the army, who has benefited the most over the last few years, is going to have to replace most of our vehicles from Afghanistan. Past 2014 I forsee some VERY lean years, regardless of which party is in power.
