No, it isn't rent-a-country, but in China they don't have a large English-Canadian population, whereas a larger percent of Canadians are Chinese or of Chinese decent, or speak Chinese (For example) and at least some efforts should be made to make them feel welcome.

Ah... come on... do you suggest every canadians should learn chinese? Things don't work that way. When you go somewhere else YOU adapt. The host country should welcome new cultures and respect each of them I agree... but that's all.

By making them feel welcome do you mean we should put out Chinese signs just for the Chinese minority? We already have headaches from bill 101 in Quebec do we really need anymore headaches before we feel inclined to reach for some asprin? Canada already makes immigrants feel welcome by allowing them the freedoms which they might not have in their home country but does that mean we should change OUR laws just for them?

Nice to know we have a imam like this in Canada.

Kick his ass to the curb.

I have no problem with immigrants in general. I think most people who come to Canada do so for the very understandable reason that they want to improve their lives. Only idealists beleive they do so because they love this country or cherish the ideals for which it stands.

I do have a problem however, with this politically correct cult of "Multiculturalism".

Until the middle part of the 20th century, most English speaking Canadians considered themselves the British presence in North America. That's how we distanced ourselves from the Yanks. Then we decided to grow up and become a little more independent.

Since that time, we've taken in millions of third world immigrants, hoping that they would somehow come to define themselves as Canadians, the same way immigrants to America do.

There's nothing wrong with taking in some immigrants, but in a country like Canada, with an already weak sense of cultural identity, massive immigration and the promotion of multiculturalism is cultural suicide.

We're taking in 300 000 new Canadians every year. In Toronto and Vancouver, the English language as it' s spoken is beginning to change because of it, social support systems are crumbling, and our sense of Canadian history and what weak vestiges of a Canadian culture we once had are being swamped.

Our policies are insane. The US takes only takes in about 900 000 immigrants a year, with a population 10 x ours. The Brits take in less than 200 000, with a population 2.5 x larger.

The fact is that these huge numbers of new Canadians will never adapt and assimilate to their adopted country with numbers like that. It's a recipe for the ghettoization of our cities, and will further alienate cities like Toronto from the rest of the country, guaranteeing more regional squabbles.

Immigration by and large is a positive thing, but we've got to cut it back to a more manageable level to allow us to absorb the huge numbers we've taken in over the last few decades.

If we'd do that, the whole multicultural debate would be pointless because people would adapt regardless.
