While no one can begrudge federal MPs or staffers from helping their buddies in Ontario, public displays of support, such as Flaherty's recent endorsement of Hudak, might be more chilling than warming for Ontario voters.
Ekos Research pollster Frank Graves says a strong Conservative majority in Ottawa "predisposes" Ontarians not to vote for Hudak.
"Ontario voters have always shown a tendency to hedge their bets between the two senior levels of government," Graves told The Globe and Mail.
Also hurting Hudak, says Graves, are comments Stephen Harper made at Toronto Mayor Rob Ford's summer barbeque where he called for a conservative hat-trick in Ontario.
"We've cleaned up the left-wing mess federally in this area," Harper said.
"Rob's doing it municipally, and now we've got to complete the hat-trick and do it provincially as well."
Graves argues these comments have clearly hampered Hudak and brightened Liberal Leader Dalton McGuinty's prospects, especially in Toronto.
