How does a 10 year old water treatment plant fall into disrepair and why is it the responsibility of the rest of Canada to pay for your neglect?

639 people on the reserve.

11 million in revenue.

3.4 million per year on "administration"

I think the chemicals found in the water are beyond what a treatment plant can do to make water fit for human consumption is what they are talking about.

It's an easy target to blame the natives.

Because it's their fault.

You have a reserve with less than 700 people getting 11 million in funding with a plant that's 10 years old. The Chief is taking in almost 100k in salary while his people go without clean water.

I've seen this story before.

I spent a couple years at a fly in in northern Manitoba. They had a similar situation. The holding tanks at the treatment plant had never been cleaned or maintained and it was to the point that the lake water was cleaner and safer than the 'treated' water.....

There's plenty of cases where the treatment system is not well-maintained. However, I didn't see anything in this article indicating that this was the case here. What I'd lie to know is what the water quality at the First Nation versus Kenora. Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are always present in drinking water, as a result of the chlorination (or chloamination or ozonation) process. They are more likely to be an issue for treatment plant that is not designed or maintained properly, which is why a comparison with Knora drinking water would be useful.

It also indicates the presence of mercury is above background levels due to human activity--perhaps an old mine?

Not enough info.
