Although democracy is attributed to ancient Athens 500bc, well known for their opium, I think its reasonable to state that democracy in one form or another existed hundreds of years prior to that, because democracy arises naturally in any well-bounded group, such as a tribe. I told you already. I'm willing to have guns in our culture.

Are you willing to have drugs in yours?

If you want to go shoot at a target, fine. If you wanted to jump out of an airplane, you are allowed that recreational risk, despite the possible ugly ending. You get informed of these risks. You then decide whether or not you are willing to take the risks. Then you jump out the plane. Why can't a willing adult enjoy drugs, something our culture created and discovered and have kept for millennia. I consider that an important piece of history.

One thing I'm glad about is that kids today are more interested in picking up a joint than picking up a gun.
