Harper is saying he’ll revisit the idea of cutting subsidies to the political parties. The political parties are small, have no funds despite having big responsibilities, and people won’t donate to them. The Conservatives do better because people with money are Conservative, anti-tax and will send a cheque. He can hobble the Parliamentary system by emphasizing the government support is “subsidies”. This is the idea that nearly got him turfed in 2008, he thought the opposition would support it – cut their own throat. He’s has to appeal to the swing vote, people that sometimes vote Liberal, and hobbling these voters alternative is not the way to do it.
Harper needs some ideas. I don’t think Parliament did very much last year, just sat there. He keeps wanking these marginal issues, like changing the Census to a volunteer basis. Where’s his idea trust?

Prime Minister Stephen Harper reaffirmed on Wednesday that he will campaign to eliminate direct subsidies to political parties in the next election, an issue that divided Canadians in the fall of 2008.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/pol ... le1868035/The Conservatives rake in the dough not because their donors are rich, but because they've figured out how to play the donation game very well. They send out flyers saying, if not in so many words, "MICHAEL IGNATIEFF WANTS TO STEAL YOUR GUN! But if you send us $20, we can stop him!" or "JACK LAYTON WILL MAKE YOUR KIDS GAY! But if you send us $20, we can stop him!" or "STEPHANE DION WANTS TO STEAL YOUR JOB AND MONEY AND SEND IT TO CHINA! But if you send us $20, we can stop him!" and then they're $60 richer. Lather, rinse, repeat.
