Well today I just received my first ever notice of Jury Duty. Its the first round (for lack of a better word) which consists of a single page basic questionnaire concerning name, age, sex, citizenship, job and "where you convicted of a crime for which you have not been pardoned".
No idea what will happen next but its a little exciting.
It's sometimes fun. Enjoy it!
I've been called probably six or seven times over the years, maybe more. I've been empaneled on three juries so far.
The first was actually a Federal case (
United States of America v. Richard Plache; James Attarian) and I was on it for 3.5 months in 1989. I ended up the foreman of the jury and brought in guilty verdicts on 115 counts against one of the guys and 110 counts against the other. Took me an hour and a half to do so, too. I didn't know at the time that everyone expected deliberations to take one to two
weeks.
The other two cases were drunk driving cases and, again, I was foreman and brought in guilty verdicts. The last case was pretty bad: the defendant was arrested drunk driving and he was driving on a suspended license for a drunk driving conviction he had received that very day.
It's kind of satisfying to do your part to help make the world a safer place.
