While neither party wants an election they have annouced the themes they'll go with should it come to that.

Here is the gist, that's about all you need. The Toronto Sun reported this, otherwise it wasn't in the news.

Harper, in a speech at a Conservative party event last Thursday in Whitehorse, said his party stands for a steady hand on the economy, providing more support to the Canadian Forces, senate reform, and more tough-on-crime legislation.

Ignatieff, addressing his MPs at their national caucus meeting here Tuesday, said “truth and transparency” would be the hallmark of the next Liberal election platform, which would focus on guaranteeing universal health care, providing early learning and childcare, regaining Canada’s reputation on the international stage, and improving pension plans and retirement security.

When Ignatieff first broached the topic of child care last spring he said he would not be detered by the deficit. He said he would "find" the money.

This is good, provided Harper actually does it.

I have my doubts.

I've said it before but it needs repeating. Our reputation now is better than it has been in years with our "allies". The only places our reputation might be down is in countries that are run be dictators, like Cuba and some other Middle East shitholes that only the political left admire.

Ignatieff has said the Liberals want day care, additional pension plan provisions and elsewhere he has mentioned more post secondary education. He wants these programs, is facing a deficit, has to pay down the debt so the country can withstand future recessions and has to pay for the aging population, a figure I read being an additional 1.9% of the GDP. He's a goof, has no idea of history, is messing up the Liberals and the country and has the potential to leave the Party high and dry. The MPs know this, to be sure, it'll be interesting what the public diplomatic dance around him will be. Last weekend I had a beer with a former political journalist that calls him "underrated by the public". This is also going on. Gawwwd.

I support better pensions.. for Canadians who raised 2 or more children in Canada. At lest they contributed to the future of Canada, meaning they created someone to take over their tax burden. Those that didn't have children should of had the extra money to save up and take care of themselves, if they didn't they get to live in a trailer park.

I support the same pension for everybody based on what they pay into it. Having children doesn't make you special. Many cannot, or choose not to.

Pensions are a good idea, what Canadians are about in fact. However the question is do you support a tax increase to cover more pensions, day care, post secondary education (other people are going to get theirs), paying down the deficit and supporting people in old age. That's what Iggy is talking about, of course it's all mouth work.

Aye, and there are many who should not have had children...

Maybe they should lose some of their pension if the animals they raised turned out to be criminals or drains on the economy.

I say no more pension plan increases until the baby boomers are dead and burried, they have only been paying into it since the 60s, and considering they are by in large the reason why the politicians of the 70s,80s,and early 90s squandered the CPP funds.
