The Liberals need to hit some hot botton issues to generate interest in their party. A sleeper hot button issue is multiculturalism. Almost nobody gets this whole citizens of the world thing. An appropriate level of discussion would be on limits. We don't want Muslins in polygamous relations. In fact we don't want Musleums that won't let their wives work and be somewhat financially sound. We don't want to import an underclass from the Caribbean. A solution to the limits thing is to let the embassies that do the interview to vet the applicants for ability to fit in. Apparently they have always done this. They had this discussion in Quebec and it didn't go well, what was it Reasonable Accomodation, but in Quebec the language and culture are over riding issues. It would take some spine to have this discussion in the glare of public opinion but these things have to be done.

I dont think its a "set it and forget it" policy issue, lets just deal with cultural issues as they arise.

But heres an idea: if we dont want to import an underclass fromt he Caribbean, lets get rid of the Temporary Worker program and tell Canadian businesses that currently hire these people that if their business model doesnt allow them to hire Canadians at the prevailing rate then that means they dont have a viable business model, period. That might mean people like you and I might have to get used to higher prices for certain services that rely on this cheap labour, but thats the price we pay to do things properly.

I don't want to see a party dependant on immigrants because the only way to grow their ranks is to bring in more people and that causes all sorts of problems.
The Libs are scrabbling because they stand for nothing, only holding whats not held by the NDP on the left and the CPC on the right. I also believe that the interaction between a left party and right party will serve voters better than a center party that serves neither.

I'm not clear on the topic of this discussion. Are we critiquing the conception of "citizens of the world" or immigration policy or culture or what?

I am anonymoose!

How about Simcoe's idea of letting the flotsam and jetsam and dregs of British and European peasants move here. Oh wait, that's the whole DAMN PROBLEM!!!!

There, I fixed that for you.

I think that idea came from the inscription on the Statue of Liberty:

"A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Thanks but it wasn't broken. Those British and European "peasants" BUILT this country. They had pride in their new home. What's showing up these days don't have any pride in Canada, we're just a means to an end for many of them.
The British dregs you are referring to were sent to Australia
But thanks for playing

Fail. You troll in your shit.

Those British and European "peasants" didn't build shit.

Canada was planned, and financed and by the British elites, bankers, and industrialists.

The European peasants who did the heavy lifting are as replicable as black Slave labour in the South, minimum wage 3rd world "dregs" and summer student labour.

In fact immigrants today probably have more roles in shaping Canada than any of the past immigrant groups have since the British lords and planners.

My post above is riddled with errors but I can't edit on a Blackberry, for some reason it crashes in the edit screen.

I mean to say "replaceable", not "replicable" and the last sentence is meant to be “…wealthy British landowners”, not "planners".

Two things:

1) When did this country finish getting "built?" Truth is, countries and societies are always under construction, and the "flotsam and jetsam" of this world have always done the dirty work that the established classes consider themselves too good for. Thats true whether were talking about Chinesse "coolies" builind the railroads or modern migrants picking our fruits, cooking our meals, delivering our pizzas and driving our cabs.

2) Every wave of immigrants, European and otherwise gets pissed on and called "dregs" and "opportunitsts" by the wave that came first. The Brits pissed on the Irish, then the Brits and Irish together pissed on the groups that came later and on it went for the Germans, Ukranians, Italians, Greeks, Poles, Jews etc when they got here. Every group tries to scratch out some existence for itself upon arrival, gets derided for it, then after they "make it" as a group they turn around and start deriding those behind them that are trying to do the same thing. Unfortuntately, its human nature to be angry, petty, self-entitled, self-righteous xenophobic hypocrites.

Usually foreign workers do a job that Canadian doesn't want to do. Furthermore , there isn't a problem move a business to China with their cheap labor.
Look at Canadian Immigration policy, a semi-skilled worker has a fat chance to be in Canada.

Oh for sure. All those cab drivers and convenience store owners were in real short supply until we threw open wide the doors of immigration.

And as for trolling, I save that for when I go fishing. Your assertion would hold much more weight if you didn't include "IN fact" and "probably" in the same sentence to describe what you think.
"In fact", means it's a fact. "Probably", means yer guessing.
In other words scooter, you really don't know and just want to troll the thread.

Btw, thank you for supporting my argument. Your claim that the Elitists planned Canada might be true. But they couldn't build shit without those European "peasants" doing the work now could they. It was indeed those "peasants" that built this country. And let's not forget the Chinese that helped build our railways. And in the last Century, those "peasants" built our infrastructure: our homes, our highways and roads, our sewage systems etc.
But yeah, I suppose driving cabs and owning convenience stores are much more important in the building of our nation

And BF, I'm not referring to everyone that comes from the 3rd world as a dreg.
Maybe my wording of it caused confusion. I'm talking about the dregs that come here with nothing to offer Canada and are let in anyway. Certainly there are those from the 3rd world that are happy to be here and work hard to contribute.
We just need to be a little more choosy about who we let in. Not to mention when you have record high unemployment throughout the country, it doesn't make sense to maintain the status quo when it comes to immigration.
