The government is trying to pass new "anti piracy" copyright laws. But it seems like its being done only due to foreign pressure and of course pressure from the entertainment industry.Im not sure its in our best interests. Seems like we just lose rights and gain nothing

They already tried this once, and even I was appalled. I sent a letter to the government and got a response. We need fair copyright laws, not draconian measures.

bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad
Really, awfully, horribly, terribly, unbelievably bad.
As a matter of fact, it's so much worse than bad, it would take the light from bad 1000 years to reach it

In short, it ain't good.

No need to get excited about this.

Just like the long-gun registry, it will only affect those who fall for it. Like anything else, there are ways around it. In such matters, it always has been, and always will be that we lead, they follow. These putzs are reactionary!

It is purely coincidence, more likely 'coincidental self-servance' that it appears to be that any politician does what the electorate wants done!

There will of course be ways around it but its about more then that. If I buy a cd I should be able to copy it to my computer and but it on my Mp3 player. Even if this bill passes I will still be able to do that. However I should be able to do it legally. Copyright holders obviously have rights but so do ordinary people. We may not own the copyright to a certain piece of media but once we buy a copy of that media we do in a sense own the media or at least we should. I don't have a cd walkman anymore. If I have a vinyl record I should if I were so inclined be allowed to record it and listen to it in other formats. Not that many people will be recording there record collects to there computers but some will and these people should not be considered criminals. They should be considered music enthusiasts. It the digital age and we need legislation that reflects that and this is not it. Media formats go in and out of style we should not be forced to constantly update to different formats in order to continue to enjoy our favorite albums and movie in ways that are convenient to us the consumers.

Please take the time to write a letter or at least to tell other people about this issue. It will affect of lot of people. And some of those people you probably care about.

As long as YOU have made the original PURCHASE, copying to another format for your own use is not the issue or any area for concern, regardless of who knows about it. The issue is about you purchasing the media file and then letting 'me' copy it for free. In reality, now there are two copies of that particular file while it has only been paid for once. Lost royalties!

Who's 'they'? The Record Companies, the USA (through their copyright laws), the Government...?

EDIT: Or someone(thing) else?

'They' is 'those who make the laws. 'We' ( us, me, you et al) come up with 'something' then they pass laws against 'it'. Reactionary!

Surprisingly a lot of people don't understand this.

That is surprising, because its pretty clear...
If you buy it and copy it 100 times for your own use, no one cares.

If you buy it, copy it 100 times and give it away or sell it without paying royalties, you have a problem.

Don't worry. ACTA will ensure we cannot copy it for our own use, and performers will get paid whether or not they perform, and then the silly question will go away for ever.
