Why should gun owners be allowed off the hook when I have to pay to register my car or my pets?

Because long guns are safer than cars, pets, children's swimming pools...maybe even baseball bats, kitchen knives, and the internet.

The "hits" argument (the only one positive imo) is unfortunetly bullshit.
The register is hit whenever a cop look for someone, it's automatic.

So if you get caught speeding, the system will automatically hit the registry when the cop looks up your license (which is linked to your address).

Still there is no reason why guns should not be registered as are cars.

I think history tells a different story. Governments that take away firearms have proven to be genocidal maniacs. Are you too smug to think it couldn't happen in Canada, say in 10 years? 30 years? 80years?

If i get caught jaywalking in my swimsuit where there is absolutely no place to hide a firearm, the registry gets 'hit'. I am sure that most cops see the lack of value in this.

lol that's crazy: no we don't have to register our pets

What you seek is not only registration like car. You can sell a car to someone without filling bunch of papers. You have to register it and license it if you want to drive on public road.

What I see wrong is that's none of the government business if I have a gun or not and that with that law, we are guilty until proven innocent. That's like old school 1600 French monarchy justice. And like I said, IT WAS ALREADY DONE before: we had to register the gun when buying it, we had to have a permit, we had to have a license to buy.

That register only cost money and sent some candies to anti-guns people. Politics. And gave subsidized jobs to people in Miramichi who just lost them because of new fishing legislation.

No, it shouldn't be any different then government control over the food we eat, the booze we drink, etc. What business does the government have telling anybody anything for that matter. Shall we get rid of all laws and all government then?

i'm all for gun control and crime fighting, but the right way. The registry has proven it doesn't lower crime. We should stop it and use the money to finance the strenghtening of our borders where the illegal guns come from. that's the problem.

Yet it is cops who find value. All the arguments against this are simply the same sort of nonsense that armed militias down south use to oppose virtually any and all laws that may affect them.

thats ok, i didn't expect that you would.

I am pretty sure you are wrong when it comes to drunk driver fatalities and the number of accidental enfant deaths caused by inattentive parents with swimming pools.

actually it's true. cars, pools, knives and maybe the internet kill much more people than long guns.

First off crime is to complex to make such casual links although gun control proponents do the same thing. http://www.guncontrol.ca/English/Home/Facts/Facts.htm

Second gun owners don't get a free ride. Get a license and register your gun. If that is a problem then what about people who want to openly carry assault rifles when they stroll the street? How can the government make laws against that? How about if I want to ride my bison through rush hour traffic? Why should the government make laws against that?

We can make all kinds of arguments complaining about the governments right to make laws but in the end it amounts to the same.

what are you saying? that cops are worried about a jaywalker in a swimsuit that might be hiding a long rifle up his ass? Nope, not even cops are that paranoid.

First off, let me point out that we register cars. As for accidental deaths compared to gun deaths and I'm going to include all guns because this long gun crap is just that. Provide some stats.

In addition we register children which is exactly what a birth certificate.

In any case the government has as much right to make people register their guns as they do setting speed limits.
