Subject: Fw: SAD BUT TRUE. Here's an unfortunate blunder by the Federal politician's.
Pensioner vs. Refugee
It is interesting that the federal government provides a single refugee with a monthly allowance of $1,890.00 and each can also get an additional $580.00 in social assistance for a total of $2,470.00.
This compares very well to a single pensioner who after contributing to the growth and development of Canada for 40 to 50 years can only receive a monthly maximum of $1,012.00 in old age pension and guaranteed Income Supplement. Maybe our pensioners should apply as refugees!
Lets send this to all Canadians, so we can all be ticked off and maybe we can get the refugees cut back to $1,012.00 and the pensioners up to $2,470.00 and enjoy some of the money we were forced to submit to the government over the last 40 or 50 years.
Please forward to every Canadian to expose what our elected politicians are doing to the over taxed Canadian
Can anybody verify or refute these numbers???

I think President Ralph has a nice ring to it! What do you think?
That part wasn't in the email.
So that's where it came from, maybe, doesn't confirm or refute the numbers... does anybody have a more relialble source, like a government website or something?
I don't doubt the numbers, just like more than word of mouth or internet before I put any stock in it.

I would love to see if this is true or not, cause I think we would have to start a revolt if it is. It's nice how the government has been saying over the years that Canada Pension might be bancrupt when all the baby boomers retire, if these numbers are true, I think we should have a little chat with them.

It's really sick to think that a person born and raised here, worked their entire life, paid taxes and get pissed on by the Liberals cause they think it's more important to let money sucking non contributing members of some other society into Canada.
Thanks Liberals, you once again prove my point that you’re the worst thing to happen to Canadians. I wish people would retain some of the crap you pull on Canadians before elections.
It’s also funny that anyone that speaks about this would be considered a racist, well if I’m a racist for thinking this, it also makes your UnCanadian for thinking that seniors deserve less then refugees who have never given anything to Canada except a open hand for the cheque to fall into.
IceOwl spare me the bleeding heart crap going through your head right now, i don't want to hear it.

Yea... like I said, nobody has yet to confirm or refute the numbers.
Nobody has looked at the total number of refugees vs the total number of retirees.
Nobody has told me how long the refugeges can collect this payment, or how many payments they are eligable for. Refugees are usually escaping something, and therefore come here with nothing, usually. So is this a short term start-up fund, or can they actually live off it for years?
Funny how some folks will fly off the handle before they know what they're talking about...

I don't know. There was a bit of a controversy about one of the wives of Farrah Adid, the Somalian warlord, being in Canada, a few years ago, and milking the welfare system.

This isn't their fault. Incredible pressure from special interest groups have been at fault here and not just during the current reign of the Liberals. As soon as anyone says refugee or the "P" word, our elected officials run for the hills and give them what ever they want to just go away from them and the press. It's the inherent spineless nature of all politicians on both side of the house who are a slave to public image, not public service.

Someone actually wrote a similiar letter to the editor in my local paper. A few weeks later someone from a government agency, I can't remember which, wrote in to dispel this story. My dad being a pensioner was sure pissed about this, but like all things that sound outragouse they should be taken with a grain of salt.

I've seen something similar except it was for prisoners, making a clear case that it would be better for pensioers to retire to prisons.

Over the last year, an unfortunate email campaign has pitted pensioners against refugees. The widely distributed email is based on an April 2004 letter to the editor of the Toronto Star which mistakenly claimed that a single adult refugee receives over double the monthly benefit of $1012 given to a single Canadian pensioner.
Nothing could be further from the truth. In Canada, a single refugee adult receives about $600/month through the resettlement assistance program (RAP). RAP offers initial support to refugees referred to by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for resettlement in Canada.
Under RAP, refugees arriving in Canada receive very basic furniture and household effects. The one-time start-up allowance also covers winter clothing, as well as a loan for a rental deposit and telephone hook-up. After this start-up allowance, government-assisted refugees receive a monthly cheque which follows maximum prevailing social assistance rates in each province. The national monthly average for a single adult refugee is $600. Some provinces, like Nova Scotia and Alberta, offer slightly more. Ontario, the province which receives the largest number of refugees, offers only $580.
Refugees with no other source of income can receive the benefit for up to a year while they learn English and look for work. Those able to work are eager to do so as soon as they can.
All Canadians, old and new, deserve the income support they need to meet basic needs and live with dignity. Let’s work for justice for all, rather than pitting one vulnerable group against another.
