Canada Post Parcel Delivery should be privatized. The overpaid, coodled, unionized, anti-service employees should be replaced by people who want to work. Their salary should be cut in half, and, the cost of parcel delivery should be left to the free market to determine.

I want to get Canadians seriously thinking about this as an option to the lousy service that we are getting now.
FedEx or UPS or some other large courier company could bid on taking over the parcel delivery service and Canadians would be the better off for it.

What do you think? Your comments are welcome.

Privatization means they won't make deliveries to routes that aren't profitable or else charge much higher fees for remote areas.

No. Keep it government run.

True. For a 5 lb package to a remote area, you're looking $80 with FedEx and about $57 with CP.

The saying around here is that we only PAY couriers for overnight delivery.
I do half our shipping & receiving via Postal Express. It's normally 48 hrs for half the price or less. Tons of suppliers do postal. If you ship FedEx here, you pay their rate and pick it up at the Post Office.
Been shipping shit all over N America for over 16 years.
Your rant has no validity whatsoever.

I'd have to agree with Derb on this one.

Not to mention I'm perfectly happy with Canada post and its service. Overnight delivery in down town Calgary and 5 business days to anywhere in Alberta. All for 59 cents. It doesn't get much better than that. Ditto on their parcel deliveries as well and their rates are way lower than FedEx and UPS.

Who says it isn't like that now?
I live in a 1700 people village, and CP does not deliver ANY mail to my home, I have to go to the post office to get my mail and parcels.

Did I mention I pay the same for a stamp as you do?

Why thanx Fred, I'm glad you deem our comments welcome in your very first post here on cka. So, are you an ex-Canada Post employee?

With all the red meat conservatives on this forum, I bet he expected a better reception. Posties are unionized, that's enough reason to get rid of them right there. And we all know that private enterprise can do everything better than govt.

Yeah like eating up their snow clearing budget by the 15th so there's no hope of driving anywhere unless the snow falls between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm Monday-Friday.
But there's small bonuses to gov't. When the lazy-asses don't cover up the construction signs when they quit at 4:30, they can still double the fines at 3:30 in the morning.

That is one of two areas where the USPS has it over on CP. If you live in a small town or village in many parts of the US, the posties not only deliver to your house, they'll even pick up your outgoing mail. That and the USPS delivers mail on Saturdays too.
Having said that, privatizing CP is a real bad idea for the previously posted reasons.

Privatize local or easy accessible place deliveries. Keep Canada Post for the rest. Save billions.

How so? CP makes money on the easily accessible places and uses that to subsidize the rest. It'll cost you more to do what you suggest. Cost the the customers more too.

Really ?

We will save on local delivery and we will pay more to send a parcel to Iqaluit. That's it.

How will you save on parcels local delivery? You can already choose a private option if you want.

What I find very annoying (on a small client basis) is that if I want to mail something to someone in town, it costs me just as much as when I mail it to someone at the other side of the country, while it doesn't leave the post office.
