Interim leader with limitations is better than choosing Rae to lead into the next election.

I don't think even the LPC would be stupid enough to pick Rae to lead them in the next election.

Don Martin, the host of CTV's Power Play, said Rae will be expected to use his interim mandate to get the Liberals back into fighting shape.

Rae will be lucky to get anyone in the Ottawa press gallery to give him the time of day. I think the LPC should take this time to figure out who they really are before they get back into "fighting shape". To me that's the biggest reason why the Libs were decimated is because no one knows what they stand for.

Right man at the right time. You'd be hard pressed to find someone with as much expienece in leading the party from the hole it dug itself. Rae has been a member of the 3rd party in Ottawa previously and he was a star in that parliament, so he understands the limitations a 3rd party has. He'll instinctively understand how & where to choose his battles. He gives the Liberals much needed time to get their ducks in a row ahead of the next election 4-5 years down the road. If they're smart come out as a 34 person cohesive force June 2 for the 41st while the NDP is still stumbling around trying to get their legs under them with their 103 members.

he's not... hence the "interim" before leader. With the condition that the intermin leader can't run in the leadership race to come in 2012.

Just goes to show that even the Libs know that having Rae as anything but an 'El Tee' isn't going to win over the new Tory stronghold of Ontario.

It's a response to the accusations that Iggy was "coroneted" I think. Even though he was eventually elected as party leader at a leadership convention, people continued on with the idea that he was never elected. They can't say that if the interim leader can't run.

Wouldn't call him "the right man", but he seems to be the only one at this time. I think the choice moves the Liberals closer to a merger with the NDP.

The Liberals have always labelled themselves as the party of the middle trying to balance left and right sides in order to appeal to more Canadians than other parties. In recent years they have lost their focus and perhaps their touch with the supporters of the past. I am not sure Rae is the person to 'rebuild' the party to have the required level of support again. Perhaps it is time to borrow a page from the Reform Party and go back to the roots. Start at the comunity level and bring people forward to the convention level who will then form the policies that the electorate can support.

Or they could sit behind closed doors and guess at what might do the trick in getting more people elected.

And so would die the Libs.
