I have read through the platform and I can’t see how their costing adds up to the numbers they’re claiming.

Ya I know but one really good example is the "The Canadian Learning Passport", costed at 1 billion a year. They say that they will give each student $1000 per year to enroll in higher education. ????? There's close to 27,000 students enrolled at the U of C alone. That's 2.7 billion right there. Maybe I'm just misreading it something.

Quote:
A Liberal government will introduce the Canadian Learning Passport, a significant financial
boost for higher education delivered directly to families. It will provide $1,000 a year over four
years for every high school student in Canada to use for college, university or CÉGEP. For students
in low income families, the amount will be $1,500 a year, or an extra $6,000 in total.

Ah, knew there was something wrong with that, didn't the decimal when I was calculating  Very embarrassing

The amount still seems low to me though. That's just one University.

Well, it may not be that far off. There were 1,047,700 students enrolled in 2006 (the last year I can find numbers for) so even with a growth of say 2% they would be in the ball park, but still their numbers are low balled a bit.

Do you think they are going to tell the truth...it's not in a politician's nature.

For the learning passport its $1000 but its cancelling out some existing credits, like for text books. So the actual new money is onlg about half that $1000. But for a student its better since its money up-front rather than a tax credit, plus its more.

They've also vowed to vote down the budget again if the Conservatives win a minority. [huh]

Out of all the stuff the Libs have in their platform this is one of the items I like. It's a nice little program. My only fear would be that colleges and universities might see this as an excuse to raise tuitions. Other than that I like it and think it’s well thought out.

I still think I has been under costed though. The true cost of this program will probably be at least 50% higher than what they’re stating.

Today, Friday April the 8th, Ignatieff promised money for Health Care while Harper promised billions of cuts and a balanced budget. Cuts are difficult. For me they had already both promised the world and now they are adding to it.

Some of Ignatieff's platform is good, but I don't think he costed this thing properly at all.
