OTTAWA - If CBC anchor Peter Mansbridge wants to tell Canadians his salary, that's up to him, says Heritage Minister James Moore, but legislation prevents the government from doing so itself.
The statement came after Moore delivered a staunch defence of the public broadcaster amid calls by some caucus colleagues to end federal support for the 75-year-old institution.
"The Broadcast Act does put a barrier there about what Peter Mansbridge's salary is," Moore said.
"But if on a voluntary basis he wants to tell Canadians his salary, that's up to him."
Conservative MP Brent Rathgeber has put four questions on the House of Commons order paper asking for financial details about CBC — including the salaries of Mansbridge and CBC colleagues George Stroumboulopoulos and Rick Mercer.
I have to say I'm impressed by Moore - obviously this could have been used to score points with the party's base. Good on him for taking a stand and following the law.

I don't agree with it. As an employee paid by tax dollars we should know what we are paying him, but if that's the law Moores hands are tied.

I total disagree with you. If you want to know what the news dept salary budget is, that's one thing, but what an individual makes is their business not any one else. It's irrelevant that tax dollars are in the mix of the revenue of the CBC. That is his personal information and sorry, but you don't have the right to know that. If you want to make it that your wage is no longer personal information and that all Canadians have to share that info with who ever wants it, call your local MP and ask him or her to put forth a bill to make it mandatory. Me thinks your MP might not want to go along with that.

Aren't public employees who mak over 100k a year forced to reveal their salary?

Tax payer funded organization and owned by the government? I'd say that makes him a public employee. However I don't know the actual definition of one.

Under the Broadcast Act, he's not considered a public employee.
Remember, the CBC is subsidized (and heavily) by the federal government, but not entirely.
IMO, asking for Mansbridge's salary would be akin to demanding to know some scientist's salary because his research using federal grant money.

CBC is a crown corporation and publicly funded to the tune of 1 billion plus a year. It's employees should be subject to the same requirements expected of other government employees.
My position.

If it's in the act, then well done Moore for upholding it.

My pay is available for all the public to see, including specialist pay, field pay etc. As I stated, someone paid with taxpayers money, be it federal, provincial or municipal, should have their salary public.

I'd settle for knowing the approximate range, i.e. Less than the PM but more than a DM sort of thing.
On that note, is Mansbridge even worth that much?

Mansbridge is a necessary joke. While the CBC claims to be "the voice of Canadians" let us not forget that it is the propoganda arm of the gov't.
I smirked when the "Current" on CBC radio had a call in day for people who are poor. It lasted all of an hour, Anna Marie Tremonte made some "aww shucks" comments and the program was done. They moved on.
They won't dwell on the tough issues.

I was playing online poker one night and there was this crazy, stoned guy at my table. He was losing badly and everyone was ripping him and typed "You guys may be richer and smarter and better poker players than me, but only one of us used to bone Neve Campbell back in highschool". Sure, he was likely full of shit, but there's some wisdom there.
Wendy Mesley and Cynthia Dale. Mansbridge either makes A FORTUNE or he's hung like a moose.
