I was just curious as to peoples honest opinion on the Burka. Some people I've noticed believe its part of their religon and should have the inherit right to wear them. While others including alot of Muslims believe it isn't part of their religon but rather a form of extremism.

So let's leave that arguement behind for a second and answer the poll based on how it makes you feel as a Canadian to see a women clad from head to toe in a Burka.

It might be hard for some people to honestly answer this question if they've never seen a women in a Burka.

I think you should add:

It's a political/religious statement that I disagree with

It's a sign of female subjugation to me.

So do I. Because, personally, It doesn't really bother me, but I think it is sooooo stupid and demeaning, and thus as a western woman, it does bother me.

Burqa's do not belong in a western society, like uncovered arms and shoulders do not belong in an islamic society.

Can't say I have a massive issue with it - and I caveate that with, I have no more issue with it than I have with any of the ways western women are still subjugated by religion and society.

At the same time, I have to wonder if forcing freedom by outlawing burkas is really freedom?

I don't think Canada would ever 'ban' it. To me its just a symbol of things we fought against.

I wanted to leave politics and religon out of it. And just base the poll on peoples emotions.

I thought it's a symbol of what we fought for - freedom of religion, even if we disagree with some of the requirements of the religion.

No freedom in a burka mate.

Possibly. I'm curious as to why there isn't similar outrage over the dress codes of Mennonites and Hutterites who also 'dress' their women.

They do not tend to want to rule the world, so their dresscode is not important to most.

I do not like it, btw, just as I do not like burqa's.

As long as they dont use it to get special rights, (ie using it to disguise their face from the authorities) I dont have a problem with it. I hold it on the same level with the Goth kids who put garish makeup on for their social statement.

They are not married to guys who fly passenger aircraft into buildings?

It's not the burka, its what it stands for.
