The Mega Cities

The average bungalow in Toronto now cost over half-a-million dollars. Meanwhile unemployment, hidden unemployment and low wages are rampant. Some 50% of adult youth between the ages 20 and 29 still live at home. Toronto does not need to get any bigger. Housing prices will just go up further. In addition transportation is become strained and there is no fix to that. Even the proposed $50 billion of subways won’t fix it. The pressure is on. A poll I read had only 5% of Torontonians wanting the city to get bigger. The brakes should be put on now, at 5.6 million. This should be an active public discussion yet the politicians are sitting there like we don’t know times are getting squeezed. The city is getting between 80,000 and 100,000 immigrants a year. This is simply love of the old ways, when life was working out better. However the likes of McGuinty and his team are far from the understanding a liveable city is populism. They are like old growth, two hundred feet high pines. They are well established, have been there a long time, but are past their prime. They are pining for a power long gone. They need to be axed by work-a-day loggers and sent to the mill. And Vancouver is worse, there a house is even more expensive and there is little flat land to build on. Time is moving on.

Here I thought the thread would be about New York, Tokyo or some other real mega-city.

Toronto is big, but it's no mega-city, no matter how much Torontonians think it is.

Politicians love growth because approximately 25% to 50% of the cost of a project in a major North American city goes to permits and licenses and fees. Municipal governments LOVE this kind of money because it is a tax that no one (for the most part) complains about. The downside is that even in supposedly 'green' cities development is frequently reckless.

You don't really need more than one NYC. It's the centre and should remain so, the rest should be managed better. NYC cost stick out in the almanac.

Maybe instead of stopping growth, they should be concentrating on affordable housing. We will not be able to stop people from migrating towards a major city, congestion is a huge concern, but will take drastic measures to correct. Not approving building permits for yet another multi-billion dollar condo complex with units starting at $750,000 would be a start. The people that can afford housing in Toronto, most likely have other residences in other cities, ie. New York. We don't need anymore housing for them, we need affordable housing in the downtown core, so that the 1 million+ riders a day on the TTC and the over 4 million people that use the 401 on a daily basis, could move closer to the city where they work and lessen the congestion.

Also tolls should be instituted going into the Toronto core, I see too many people sitting intheir cars by themselves, you want the luxury of driving, pay for it! I don't drive downtown yet my tax dollars are allocated just the same as the ones that do. They should incur the expense of up keeping our roads

Only if you pay for the side walk that I don't use, while driving, and I take it the bus you ride doesn't use the same road I do?

While we are at it, I take it you don't want to pay for the child tax benefit, since you don't have children? My children will be there to wipe your ass when you are old or sick, but hey, that's not your problem now, right?

As a tax payer I already pay for the roads/sidewalks. I take the subway into the city everyday so I dont use the downtown streets even on a bus. I'm sure you walk on the sidewalks to and from your car, so your point is moot. It is common place for a major city to have tolls into them. London, New York, Oslo just to name a few.

You are just plain ridiculous and I can't take you seriously when you bring up a completely different topic than the one I was commenting on to try an make your point. You and people like you are the problem with our beautiful country, you know youre wrong, so you try to make your point in other ways. The old saying, "you don't have to be right as long as the other person is wrong", you tried to make my point seem way off base by bringing up a child tax and assuming that I don't have any children. And I would be more than happy to have you or your kids wipe my ass now if your up for it, no need to wait until Im old and sick!

HAHAHAHA loll your soooooo cool can I be your friend??

You want to "Call it", well it's my turn to "call it"

Judging by your signature, you support the BC police, so you must support the beating of innocent BC civilians at the hands of those paid to protect said citizens, out of tax revenue that comes from those same citizens.

Youre in the Navy, so youre welcome for your paycheck, thanks for doing a whole lot of nothing. Question, why couldnt you stop the boat filled with illegals that was turned away from 2 other countries on its way here, isnt that what we pay you for?? nope instead you and your superiors allowed it to dock, costing Canadian's over $25million just to process and deport them........Thanks

Called it doi
