More people speak portuguese in brazil than speak French in the whole @#$%^& world.

it is a dying language fewer people chose French .

About 25% of Canadians are francophone; however, they are concentrated in Québec. Outside of Québec, only 4% of Canadians speak French as a native language. French is studied less and less as a second language, and those who learned it in high school don't tend to remember it. 17.4% of Canadians are bilingual.

I told my daughter if she wanted a second language that will get her somewhere take Mandarin Chinese.

That's why late immersion is bullshit. If kids learn French in early to middle immersion, they will never forget French. I hadn't spoken French in years and when I worked in Quebec this past summer, I picked it right back up again after two weeks.

I used the Gatinois/Southern Quebec dialect/accent. I could barely understand what the Northerners were saying, but you get used to it after a few weeks.

The French Foreign Legion would argue with that.....as would I.

You really can teach an old dog new tricks----it's all in the motivation----

Hardly a comparison, since if you join the FFL, that becomes your "job" and you need to speak French and you have to use it every day, for years.

Whereas in late immersion, you learn some French for a few years(two) and then 99% of people drop the courses once they hit High School and so they lose their French. And while I can't be sure, I remember hearing something about kids being most impressionable and "absorbant" in their early years...
