If this keeps up, Carolyn Parrish is going to start worrying that voters don’t actually want her around.
Ms. Parrish, the former MP booted unceremoniously from the federal Liberal caucus some years ago, defeated in her re-election bid for a seat on Mississauga city council last year, went down to another defeat on Monday when she placed second in a byelection that would have put her back on council against her nemesis, Mayor Hazel McCallion.
Parish lost by 241 votes out of 11,150 cast. The contest didn’t exactly galvanize the huge suburb next to Toronto: the official results suggests there were almost as many people seeking the seat as there were casting ballots. Municipal governments have a far bigger impact on your life than other levels of government, yet hardly anyone bothers to vote. Oh well.
The winner was Bonnie Crombie. The next happiest person in Mississauga was Hazel McCallion, who wanted Parrish back on council about as much as she wanted a cholera epidemic to break out at the giant mall next to city hall (or is city hall next to the giant mall?) Parrish was among the most enthusiastic backers of an inquiry into property dealings involving her son that that have tarnished the mayor’s image.
The mayor, who turned 90 this year and needs more aggravation like she needs a hole in the head, didn’t bother to hide her enthusiasm for Ms. Parrish’s demise. “I’m delighted,” she said, after turning up to celebrate with Crombie. “The best thing happened for Mississauga tonight…. It means the harmony and the peace going on at City Hall will continue.”
“Harmony” in Mississauga generally means letting the mayor runs things as she’s been doing since the retreat of the last ice age. Parrish wasn’t big on going along. Right mayor?
“I think it would be unfortunate if she got back on council. While she was there, she undermined [council]. It was unacceptable. She cost the city a lot of money.”
That means yes.
