Classifying things incorrectly because they are too lazy to think is also wrong. Citizens make decisions at the polling booth based on information provided by the government, and about the government. Having the government classify everything as 'secret', and then tell us it will be making huge decisions such as ACTA, NAFTA, the SPPNA (all about jellybeans!) and others; because we don't have enough information to be well informed on the subject - is just wrong. Governments need some embarrassment, or lots of unemployment.
The difference between them being, the budget is something that can hurt a lot of people before it's openly published - and loses it's classification after it's released. The transcript of the Monebello talks, where big business met with top government officials, is still classified. That is exactly the kind of thing that Wikileaks should be leaking. And does leak.
I agree with this. The government has become so accomplished at its media handling that Canadians get absolutely nothing out of them. Judges routinely ban media from courtrooms. It's years since the BC Rail fiasco out here, when the police served a warrant on the BC Legislature, and we still don't have the full story. By the time the truth comes out, all those that profitted from it will have moved on.
And as mentioned before, has anyone visited the government
site concerned with our engagement in Afghanistan. It is utter drivel. There is no way you can divine any useful information from that puff piece.
The political style of choice right now is strong centralization (in the PMO and, here in BC, in the Premier's Office) and a muzzling of political staff and civil servants. It's been revealed that Conservatives have regularly been interfering with Access to Information requests.
It is all about
control the message, and the people are poorer for it.
