It is purely aimed at the Jihadis we seem to be cultivating in Canada. Even if you were born here you can still be stripped of certain elements of citizenship such as passports etc.

If we had a such a law on the books right now, Khadr could have been charged under that law. Treason as it stands is pretty vague. Tightening it is well overdue in this climate and the high number of immigrants we have taken from countries that openly promote Islamist terrorism.

On the wada-wacky front, its a law change not a hit squad. Laws are tried and tested in the courts not at CFB Borden or on some third-world shitholes mountains.

I doubt that any citizenship, even to landed immigrants or to any of the other assholes of convenience, would be seen by the courts as something that could be stripped away. It's just the way it is now that once they're on Canadian soil they get all the same rights as the rest of us. That some of these sons of bitches certainly don't deserve these rights is unfortunately irrelevant.

In terms of citizens going overseas to join terrorist or insurgent groups, it would seem that the proper course would be to define this a a type of criminal activity that will result in prison time. Call it "engaging in mercenary activity on behalf of illegal militant/terrorist groups/organizations" or something equally baffling in a legalese definition. That way it would be seen as a broader spectrum rather than just aimed specifically at Muslims or Tamils. Speaking only for myself I could see nothing better than having any white Canadians who worked on the behalf of the Irish Republican Army, or any Serb/Croatian-Canadians who went to join those murderous militias in Yugoslavia, doing some hard prison time right next to whatever jackasses went to Lebanon to join up with Hezbollah. If we want this garbage from overseas to not happen here then we should be harshly punishing anyone and everyone who goes over there to join any of these bush-league ethnic/sectarian militias and amateur ensatzguppen organizations. Fuck 'em all equally, I say.

Amen.

Stripping citizenship probably would never fly legally. But we can send back non-citizens who can't keep their nose clean here, and should be much more vigorous about it. And extend the waiting period before you can become a Canadian citizen. Or better yet, if we went the temp work permit route as the main way of taking in immigrants, it would take them 4 years 2x2 year permits) before they can become permanent residents, then another 3 years until citizenship, that's 7 years. Sounds about right.

I agree re citizenship andy. The test I did was a joke. People were openly cheating, most couldn't string a sentence together in English and it was obvious that they were getting help from family or friends that just walked into the 'test' centre. Nobody stopped them.

My citizenship ceremony was a joke. I won't get into the full details but I lodged an official complaint and a judge was reprimanded.

Citizens should be able to communicate in one of our two official languages.

Yes! Of course it does. That's why this suggested law bothers me. They are removing that "depends now don't it" part of the equation.
