The bottom line is that if you want to fly on Air Canada to Dubai, you have to fly from Toronto to Frankfurt or London and wait for a connection. If you want to fly Air Emirates from Toronto to Dubai, you can fly direct. Air Emirates offers a better service. It hurts all Canadians, in the long run, when the Canadian government acts in a protectionist manner against a superior foreign competitor. Canada is wrong on this one and if the UAE were to take this case to the WTO for a ruling, we'd surely lose.
Once again, our so-called laissez-faire conservative Harper is acting like a protectionist liberal.
But does that go to say that Air Canada is allowed to fly direct, and chooses not to ?
