Why these Western University profs say it's time to merge the Catholic and public school systems

It will be interesting to see how many conservatives in ontario are willing to entertain this. What matters more, cutting the deficit by 10% or keeping publicly funded faith based schools?

This conservative would like to see all funding removed from all religious education.

I feel like that's the more "conservative" opinion. At least in terms of less government, less spending. Have faith based schools if they want, but fund it themselves.

My wife is a catholic school teacher and I maintain 100% support for public school system absorbing and assimilating the Catholic schools and purging all religious teaching from public education. It’s inevitable that it will happen eventually, probably in my lifetime if not the next couple of decades.

I do NOT support the government taking over the Catholic schools. Leave them alone.

But take the government money out of them and REALLY leave them alone.

Well, then you got your money's worth!

I went to a Catholic school for one semester when I was eight.

The nun who was teaching cursive was angry at me for not doing exactly as she told me and she hit my finger with one of those wooden rulers with a metal edge on it.

It cut me so deep that I bled like fuck all over the place. They gave me a paper towel to wrap it and when my mother showed up and saw my finger the nun, Sister Philomena, said something to the effect that I deserved it.

Big mistake.

My mom kicked her ass. It was pretty epic. Then she took me to the hospital for stitches.

That was my last day at St. John Vianney.

Forty-six years later I still have the scar.

The government owns the buildings and the property. We’ll be happy to lease it back to those who want to use it.

Even better. Not only save money, but make money off them!

They aren't all bad, I went to Catholic school through middle school, the nuns and the brothers were strict but they weren't abusive, perhaps my school was an exception. What happened to you was terrible, but your mom kicking the ass of anybody doing that is epic.

I do agree that faith-based schools like this need to be a thing of the past, not only for situations like the one you were in but also for schools from the religion of peace. Imagine what goes on in places like that.

Be as religious as you like, but the schools should be secular we will all be better off.

Religion has no place in school any more than facts have a place in church.

This is one of those un-necessary issues that pops up every now and then for some unknown reason, like fluoridated water or "experts say we should be paying MORE tax". And, like those other two issues, bothering the Catholics over their schools deserves to be completely ignored. Not worth a second's consideration, not with so many other vital issues that need much more time and attention to be given to them.

Religious teaching has no place in a publicly funded system paid for by the taxpayer. A large number of Catholic school students aren’t even Catholic and an even larger number perhaps the majority are only nominal Catholics who not even very religious and don’t even regularly attend church, they just have stereotypical view that Catholic schools are better
