We've had riots in the UK, the story goes there's hardship - but also these young guys are layabouts and won't work at jobs available. They say the immigrants from Poland found jobs and were willing to work. How does that work exactly? In Ontario welfare for a single person is $585 a month while a full time minimum wage job clears you maybe $1500 a month. Who exactly would layabout on $585 if you could clear $1500 for a simple entry level job? I can't believe the $585 figure, it shocks me. I can't see how people down their survive. The $1500 figure isn't good either if you've stuck it in and paid the price. The other thing is the turn over in jobs at the bottom is so large that you can find a job even if there is high unemployment. The high unemployment sort of cloaks the situation. My understanding is England has a reasonable minimum wage and the unemployment in London is no worse than Toronto. A couple of English cities are quite bad, Liverpool, but not London. What exactly is a layabout, other than drug addicts? Any theories out there?

Lazy yobs living at home or mooching off someone. They may not be addicts, but are involved in petty crime to supplement their income. It is hard to conceive some hump sitting about happy to get a few hundred dollars a month for nothing, but they exist.

Maybe they get extra cash from panhandling as well - I think a bunch of the dog owning drum banging shit pumps on the streets out west could be successfully accused of that.
