England fans attacked by hooligans

By Sean O’Neill

Hostility off the pitch erupted in violence last night as riot police shielded English supporters after an attempted ambush by drunken German mob
GERMAN riot police charged crowds of football supporters in the centre of Cologne last night at the end of England’s match against Sweden.

Police with batons drawn moved in to thwart what appeared to be an attempt by German football hooligans to attack English fans in the central Café Alter Markt.

Officers surrounded one bar where German fans were drinking and formed a human barricade between the Germans and English.

There had been tensions throughout the day between groups of supporters, many of whom had been drinking all day. Tens of thousands of Germans took to the streets to celebrate their team’s earlier 3-0 victory over Ecuador. An estimated 60,000 England supporters were in the city and many without tickets watched England’s match in clubs and on outdoor screens.

The trouble began at the Altstadt Pub where a large crowd of young Germans had gathered. At the final whistle in England’s match the German supporters made an attempt to rush English people drinking on the opposite side of the square.

The white-helmeted police officers made several baton charges to clear Germans to the east side of the square and drove England supporters towards the west.

Police came under a hail of bottles, chairs and other missiles as bystanders fled in panic.

This is funny. If it had been the other way around with English fans attacking the German fans it would have made the front page of every newspaper in the world. Would you all not agree?

Okay, even though I'm not a fan of England (and GreatBriton I mean the team not the country), I think that that's just bang out of order starting big fights like that.

I wonder if there will ever be a World Cup where no fights break out when your team gets hammered.

Oh yeah GB, and you conveniently left out news reports that came out last night from Gelesnkirchen where hundreds of English fans were drunk and causing ruckus and being arrested left right and center.

Germany better watch out. I hope Portugal kicks England's ass back to the UK today. If that happens we'll be seeing mini war zones on the news tomorrow.

And yet again you feel the need to post your British inadequacies so I'll post again, who cares. Huge chip off your British shoulder. Get it fixed. Good thing the Enlightenment is beyond Europe or otherwise we'd be in another Dark Age...

I myself hope England wins. If there is any violence I know that it is going to be between the idiots that just come to fight and not the fans that come for the love of the game. I don't understand why the English are always the focus for violent clashes when there are hooligans from many other countries. Just look at the rioting after the Oilers/Hurricanes game. You don't expect all of Canada to be held responsible for those idiots do you.

England can never seem to win when it comes to penalties. They did well though to make it that far with just 10 men.

Here we go, just cause your team got knocked out too. England should have beaten you in their match. You call Ferdinand a wimp what about the Portugese players diving all over the place and Ronaldo whinging to the referee like a little girl.
