It works, you can do a url check at net tools, just click the proxy test button. Using Tor the test can take up to a minute to complete on my cpu. Without Tor it takes a second or two.

To go to a web page with Tor takes my cpu about 30 seconds, to switch pages inside a web site takes approx 10 seconds.

I have to start the privoxy program manually before starting firefox. Once started it remains started until you turn it off or turn your cpu off or reboot. Make sure that your bottom left toolbar shows the green P ball and the smaller green ball with a stem coming out of the top, if the smaller ball is x'ed out Tor won't work and you will get "can't connect" messages. Make sure to enable Tor on your firefox tool bar as well.
Six - on your status bar (bottom of your FireFox screen) you should see Tor disabled - click it once to enable.
You can also get a plug-in to control the 'onion' router.

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2464/

I also like the Tor/Privoxy combo. For those that don't know about Proxies - tor will redirect your information somewhere else (so the other end looks like it's requesting information) and does not record the request, then Privoxy/Vidalia or some other local proxy makes sure that transaction is not recorded on your local machine.
