Who? Why do you care?

Quote:
Mr Ritchie was one of the creators of the hugely influential Unix operating system and the equally pioneering C programming language.

A vast number of modern technologies depend on the work he and fellow programmers did on Unix and C in the early days of the computer revolution.

Those paying respects said he was a "titan" of the industry whose influence was largely unknown.

He's one of the people who created something so vast and all emcompassing, but goes unnoticed. The programming language "C" was created by him in order to write the Operating System "UNIX". UNIX is instrumental in running the Internet, and heavily influenced most modern operating systems. CP/M borrowed heavily for it to run the first PCs, DOS stole from CP/M and mutated into Windows. Linux was created as a cheap alternative to UNIX, and it is still heavily part of the Internet. Linux influence also helped birth Android and Apple OS, and many applications that run on Windows, Apple PCs and iPhone, Android and Blackberry phones and pads - many applications as well as the operating systems themselves are written in "C".

Celebrate his passing, as everything you do today has his unseen hand in it.

You see, this hits me more than Steve Jobs' passing.

I started programming with the first Basic and then Assembler before doing a bit of C. I had the C Programming book co-written by Ritchie too.

Rip Dennis. :(

I saw this a couple days ago and was sad to see almost nothing about it.

I've seen a few, but far too few.

Thanks for posting this DrCaleb. We take so much of our technology for granted without thinking of how it all began... with just a few brilliant people with great aspirations. Amazing how quickly it all grew and expanded.

RIP Mr. Ritchie.
