Question to those photography enthusiasts on the site:

I was considering getting a 2nd battery for my digital camera as a back-up, in case I run mine down and don't have the opportunity to charge it before I need/want to use my camera again. I'm thinking ahead to travel possibilities too.

Another Sony battery is $72.

A comparable "Digipower" brand one is $40.

Quite the price difference for virtually the same battery. The gal I spoke to in the store said the only difference she understands is that the Sony brand one would likely hold a charge for longer (better quality?), but she was not 100% on this.

My question is do others on here stick to the "brand" name battery for their cameras or have you/do you use a comparable one? I DO NOT want to compromise quality for a lower price but really, if it makes no diff then obviously I'll save that $32.

I appreciate the input.

Q found a wholesaler online where he purchased a couple "knock-offs" for his new camera and they're great. They were also about 1/5 the price!

He's napping right now, but when he wakes up, I'll have him slide ya da info!

Ebay seller's name is "neewer".

The link to his items is: http://shop.ebay.ca/neewer/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

Good luck! :D

I'm getting the same life out of his cheap batteries as I was out of the original battery, seems to be a good deal so far.

I would hate to be the voice of caution here but you should be careful with batteries. There are oft reported incidents of knock-off ones leaking, shorting out and causing damage to cameras.

Just be careful saving money! Also beware of fake batteries. I hate paying the rip-off prices for OEM stuff but anything I put inside my camera is Canon only.

I use a Digipower as a 2nd battery. I purchased it for my Olympus E620 at Futureshop. No problems with it... A second battery is a wise idea...

I second that, I have the horrible habit of leaving batteries in my camera when Im not using it. It would really suck to find your battery terminals are corroded through due to leaving a cheap battery in too long.

Good advice.

Using a knock-off battery might also void any extended service contract you might have.

I very much appreciate the recent input added to this thread!

I had already decided to stick with the brand name. Yes, at the higher cost but at the same time I'd feel more confident about what I'm putting into my camera.

And Bart brings up a very good point about deviating from the brand name in case of any service issues. I did not opt for the extended warranty but if there was an issue with the battery at least I'm using the manufacturer's product.
