Google Releases Video Chat Source Code
Quote:
Google has released the source code for a technology that it hopes developers will use to embed real-time video and voice chat functionality in their Web applications.

Google acquired the technology, called WebRTC (Web Real Time Communication), when it purchased VoIP (Voice over IP) software developer Global IP Solutions in 2010, for approximately US$68.2 million. The company said it would open source the technology early last month.

WebRTC is a set of voice and video signal processing technologies, which can be accessed by developers through HTML tags and JavaScript APIs (application programming interfaces).

Today, Internet audio and video chat services from companies such as Skype are chiefly proprietary, accessible through plug-ins and client downloads. Last month, Microsoft agreed to purchase Skype for $8.5 billion.

Go Google!!!!

We will see the product. Jabber is doing a good job where I work. But, the installation and configuration can be problematic for some.

Have you looked at Ekiga? Its a great product, and it's completely open.

Ekiga.net

They have a client app for Windows and Linux, that works a lot like Skype. You can use any SIP or H.323 clients with it as well. It can tie into Asterisk nicely too.

Ho I see that the last version is more than one year old .... That's not good.

I would prefer a more active project. So that in 5 years it is still possible to use it with up to date OS and hardware.

Ekiga is just a GUI that uses Opal to do all the real work. You'll find most of the development happens there. Ekiga gets bug fixes, and they are working on an update to make it fit better with Gnome 3.

Well I'm a patient guy so I'll just wait and see what happen with Skype since I did all the training for 20 something manager already. ( And yep not one of them ever used Skype before  )

And since I'm the one building and maintaining the New and improve thine client (Just normal net top computer with no OS less than 250$) I don't want to rush my user to much. We use to have only some old neoware and Wyse thin client. But because the manufacturer drop support for the older neoware I had to find a viable alternative for the future.
