That's not true. There is still a very useful point to partitioning, and it has to do with the situation this thread is about. When you have multiple operating systems, partitioning is not only important, it's often mandatory. It also helps to keep your operating system separate from everything else so that if, say, Windows gets destroyed by a virus, you can wipe that partition and start fresh without worrying about having to format over your 600gb media collection.

Anyone not backing up a 600GB media collection to a cheap external drive is missing something.

What's the difference between an internal hard drive and an external one?

I'll give you a hint: there isn't any.

I can pretty much guarantee your 600GB media collection is where you got the virus from...

That's actually the least likely source of viruses. I've never got a virus from a video file of any kind. Most of the viruses I've ever had came from pirated software and links I shouldn't have clicked.

The external drive sits in my fireproof gun safe and it will be there in the event of burglary, fire, or flood. Your 2nd hard drive will be gone.

There's a reason why firms like Iron Mountain do not lack for business.

You might want to reconsider that location. Fireproof to guns is not fireproof to tapes or paper or HDDs. I've seen it happen where a company loses all it's backups to a 'fireproof' safe that didn't exceed the 454F needed for paper to burn, but their mylar based backup tapes were long gone.

Get a 'wet' fireproof safe meant for data storage.

or even better yet do it off site all together, or try crashplan or drop box, all will remove your fear of losing data

Pretty sure Bart doesn't keep guns at work, and is not scared of much.

I'm probably just as scared as the next person is about many of the same things. The principle difference between me and some folks is that I am not paralyzed by my fears nor am I deterred by them. Fear is nothing to be ashamed of, it's how we respond to it is what matters.
