Ok, how about this one? Trail-Vancouver with Pacific Coastal $398 Castlegar - Vancouver with Air Canada, same date $534.
The airports are 30 minutes apart, flight time 1 hour and 15 minutes each. Also, there are more flights going from Castlegar than from Trail. If you want to do a stop-over in Calgary (...) your flight with Air Canada will cost you $1240.
Different airports and different airlines - there are lots of reasons why the rates might be different - different planes, different target markets, different landing fees, different labour costs, etc.

Flights from Vancouver to NYC are twice to three times as expensive as flights from Spokane to NYC.
The other key difference is that many of the flights between Vancouver and NYC are non-stop, while the flights out of Spokane have at least one transfer at an airline hub somewhere (many have two transfers). Flights with multiple transfers are considered less desirable than direct flights and as such usually have lower prices.
Only Cathay Pacific has a non-stop flight from Van to NYC, on a night flight. Air Canada flies over Montreal or Toronto, with 9+ hours lay overs. Air Canada is almost twice as expensive.
According to Expedia, Air Canada has direct flights to NYC...and the many of the ones that do have stops in Toronto or Montreal are short layovers of an hour or two. Finally, if you compare across other airlines (United, A/C, etc) the fares for both direct flights and those with stopovers are pretty comparable.

Anyways, my point was that pricing differences are more a result of market forces (population, distance, competition, etc), rather than Air Canada arbitrarily deciding to gouge people.
I understand the hatred/disgust many people seem to have for Air Canada, but as a passenger of AC many, many times in the past two decades, I've had nothing but great experiences with them. I guess I'm just one of the lucky few...

Of all my international flights to Canada, AC was THE worst.

It was nice flying JAL from Kaohsiung because you often had an overnight in Narita at the Nikko Narita. The breakfast buffet was excellent. Hong Kong is the best layover though....They have a Popeye's, and everyone knows Popeye's rocks.
I love flying JAL! Probably the best flight I ever took was on a JAL plane in the 90s. Great service, friendly staff and a very comfortable plane.

Like I said, I must be one of the lucky few - I've flown to/from Europe, to/from Asia and across Noth America with Air Canada over the past two decades and the biggest complaint I've ever had was the headset jack didn't work - so one of the staff moved me to another seat (which was fine because I was flying alone).

My experience with AC is similar to yours the last few times I flew with them. Prior to 10 years ago it was a much different story.
I find with sites like expedia etc that I have often found cheaper flights booking direct with AC. I also have the option of selecting departure times, seats and any upgrades.

One thing that really bothered me was that we were supposed to fly with an almost empty plane from Amsterdam to Toronto to Vancouver. A Martin Air flight to Miami had engine trouble, so they stuffed the MartinAir people in with us, and it was overly crowded with only annoyed people. We were (the AC travelers) because it caused us to have a 3.5 hour delay, which made us miss our connecting flight, and they were all mad because now they had a layover in Toronto, some for a day. The cabin crew was grouchy as hell too, because they had expected an easy flight too, and now they had to work. But what really bothered me on that flight, was that we, as AC customers, got a nice treatment (if you can call grouchy cabin crew nice) but the MartinAir people were done plain rude to. It pissed me off SO bad.

Air Transat, which is Canadian too, was fabulous.
Keep your assumptions to yourself, will you?

Air Transit is junk, running junk aircraft. But I'm glad you liked it.

Compared to the AC I flew with a few times, and the service they gave, AT was fabulous.
One of the AC planes was duct taped together, so seriously...
