Smith is just trying to get out from under the cloud she cast with her "what was so bad about the residential schools?" sort of comments she made over the previous couple of years. It's the same reason she's bragging about being put on the banned list from entering Russia even though not too long ago she was spouting the usual right-wing evil that it's Ukraine's responsibility to negotiate with Putin even if Ukraine ends up losing up to a third of their sovereign territory.
Smith is gutter level cunning enough to realize the extremism that won her the UCP leadership won't serve to win a general election. So she's pretending to be a moderate until the election happens. If she wins then she'll most likely return to the full-bore crazy that got her the job in the first place, no matter the consequences to the province. The fun one will be if/when she has Alberta take over our part of the Canada Pension Plan and then has it all invested into crypto or healing crystals or some other bullshit that she and people like her keep peddling no matter how much of an obvious scam it is.
