$240 billion in the last 11 years alone:

The Statistics Canada numbers also show Quebec benefitted most from the equalization program, raking in $107.5 billion. The program shuffles federal tax dollars to provinces with less money so all Canadians have comparable public services at comparable taxation levels.

How the statistics were gathered changed 11 years ago and so Statistics Canada does not have comparable numbers before that. However, a study by the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy showed that from 1961 to 2017, Alberta’s net federal fiscal transfers amounted to more than $600 billion.

You're welcome.

I don’t think you’re understanding though. Those federal tax dollars you would have paid even if there was no equalization. Equalization is a federal spending program A Quebecker pays the same federal taxes you do and so pays just as much into equalization as you do. The idea that Albertans would somehow have more money if not for equalization is false.

If Alberta is short if funds it has nothing to do with the federal tax they pay like every other province and everything to do with their low provincial taxes. You brag about having the lowest provincial taxes in Canada while simultaneously complaining that you don’t have enough public revenue. Sounds like you need to connect the dots.

Except that redistribution of those tax dollars is not equal. The federal government redistributes that money based on the Equalization Formula, and that formula means that provinces who have good economies get less Federal goodies than Provinces that have worse economies. And Quebec is always a recipient, and Alberta is never one.

So, while we would have to pay the same, we would receive more in things like Infrastructure spending, and EI retraining programs, if the newest Equalization formula had not been signed by Prime Minister . . Harper.

Try posting an irrelevant meme. Perhaps that will work!

Stop playing the know-it-all. The high horse you're sitting on is causing oxygen deprivation.

Here's a memeingless meme for your perusal.

Why not, given that your regular comment of "stop whining!" shows you don't give a damn about anyone in Alberta who has it bad.

Well, Scottie Moe thinks we are being cheated too, but then, he's a fool or a tool.
We always told our grade 7's to first look at what they did before blaming someone else for what happened. I think most other jurisdictions started in kindergarten. We were a bit behind... you know... aboriginal kids and all.

Also, I do feel for people who have lost jobs, or their home, but if anyone should have a reason to be upset it's The Atlantic Provinces. You know, welfare mentality, moving to TO, Alberta, NWT, for work. I had to move to Saskatchewan's north to get a cushy teaching job.

Alberta's, but putting extra coal on the fire doesn't help anyone.

How far can you take this? 'I'm leaving Saskatoon because the city spent more in a ward I don't live in!!!' 'I do the dishes every night but I don't get the most to eat at dinner.' 'I worked harder than anyone, but Mrs. Murphy, who doesn't have as nice flowers as I, always wins the Petunia Prize.'

Rich people don’t get welfare. Able-bodied people don’t get disability benefits. Young people don’t get retirement benefits. Equalization by definition is about redistribution to where it’s needed.

Trudeau and Morneau could have changed the formula in their first term. Instead they froze it for another five years. It's not written in stone so it can be changed by any sitting government should they choose to do so.

The Quebec provincial government has been crowing quite loudly lately about how they're running a surplus of over $4 billion dollars. Despite being in the black now Trudeau & Morneau quietly gave Quebec another $1.4 billion equalization boost a couple of weeks after the election. Reward the base first. Despite everything ALWAYS reward the base first.
