What happened in Italy was that the scientists said that it was "outside the realm of possibility" for a major quake to follow the temblors preceeding it. Thus they
predicted the absence of a quake and that's why they got convicted for responsibility in the deaths of too many people.
The media spins this to make it look like they got prosecuted for failing to predict an earthquake when, in fact, they predicted the absence of a quake - which is equally spurious.
