Everything they want to add to the Chinook already exists. The Brits have an armour package they use for the D model, might not fit as is into an F or G but it can't take much of a modification. What's wrong with using 2 x 50's or mini's on the forward doors and a C6 on the ramp? It works for every other force out there. The Brits and US use Chinooks to do CASEVAC but only for large numbers, usually they use smaller helo's Blackhawks, Lynk, Hueys...GRIFFONS!!! And the rigs for CASEVAC already exist.
So why do we need a prototype to test this stuff? I think Boeing is taking advantage to get some test and evaluation out of the CF. Too bad we don't have a negotiator with a big enough set of balls to tell Boeing to shove it and give us what we want. By the time all this happens we will probably be pushing 2014 which is when Sikorsky is planning on reopening the MH53 line, which very well could be a better aircraft then the Chinook.
Sasquatch2 - I agree size does matter in some things, but would you use an HLVW to insert a sniper det? I would hope not. As with everything else in the military we have different tools for different jobs, the Chinook is best used to move lots of troops and lots of supplies over the battlefield. The Griffon does small party movements, overwatch, rotary CAS, CASEVAC, C2 really well. The two work hand in hand, much like different sized trucks to ground move supplies.
Bootlegga - I agree...if this contract doesn't get signed soon the CF is screwed, I think the deadline is the next election, if we sign before than we will probably be pretty safe, if it's not signed by then, than it's a crap shoot. If the Conservatives win again we may get them, if the Liberals win I think the program will die a quick death.
