And China's claims will mean something if they have the ability to defend them.

The Chinese didn't launch that Air Craft Carrier for looks, they will use it.

As what a drilling platform or a mega trawler? We're going to have to defend it from the likes of Exxon, Shell, Nexen and Enbridge. And the processors who'll gladly send the fish to China to filet, freeze, package and label "Product of Canada" and ship it back to WalMart.

Right on.

The only thing that protects us as far as Arctic possessions go is international law. If somebody decides to ignore international law and pushes hard, we ain't got nuthin' to push back with. Well not nuthin' but insufficient.

We need to develop a lot more Arctic capability - armed icebreakers, more northern air staging bases, etc.

Nobody argues our land masses and northern islands, but the sea bed and sea lanes have a good potential to eventually become flash points. Even the USA does not recognize our sovereignty over the Northwest Passage.

That's a whole other (and very worthwhile) topic. I can't believe how stupid we are in that regard. I gladly pay a little extra for seafood caught and processed in Canada (or the USA for that matter).

Everyone needs to stop being so pessimistic. Did everyone forget about the existance of the Canadian Forces? All those ships and fighters aren't there just to look pretty.

I'm tired of seeing the same people here dumping on our ability to defend ourselves. And why are you worried about ONE Chinese carrier that doesn't even have any warplanes? Obsolete Soviet technology scares us now? Come on guys.

True Canadians don't give up so easily.

Personally I didn't say anything about an aircraft carrier scaring me, but I think we need more than what we've currently got to properly police and protect the Canadian Arctic.

It's all well and good to be proud of what we've got, but it's not enough. For a country of our population and size, it's simply not enough.

Don't replace pessimism with mindless cheerleading.

Do a little research before waving the flag. Saying we can do the job with a bit of Canuck cando when we actually can't means we won't be getting the resources we need to actually do the job.

Good advice.

Seriously.

Canada has the land mass and resources of a superpower protected by the world's 25th-ranked military.

Not saying you need a massive military, not at all. But you need more than what you've got, for sure.
