Prime example. I went into Coles the other day with my daughter to buy the wife a book she'd been looking for and while perusing the prices of books that I might like I discovered that a book in Canada retailed for 22.95 Cdn while the US price was 16.95 US.

I asked the sales lady why the discrpency and she couldn't answer. But it just goes to shows that all the book stores that had the petition for people to sign complaining about being ripped off because of country of origin was nothing more than a sop to their customers that didn't do a thing.

I wouldn't be suprised if the petitions went into the garbage when they were full.

So it's not even a Canadian owned problem. Big corporations know they can rip us off with impunity just like our own retailers because we're Canadians and will grumble abit about it but in the end we'll suck it up and pay their outrageous prices.

Here's the Costco difference for TV's.

I guess it must be that long drive from the Bellingham Costco to the Abbotsford Costco that drives up the price like that. It's hell living in the far north of the lower mainland.

People working the 'till have no clue. Even if they did, I'd be surprised if they would take (waste?) the time to properly explain it. The problem is caused by those way, way above their pay grade.

These days some books simply say "Price Higher in Canada". Pretty ballsy when they openly declare they are ripping you off.

Haven't bought a printed book in years.

One of the most offensive examples is that of eBooks, believe it or not some are actually priced higher for Canadians. I'd like to see someone try and argue that there are greater costs involved when a Canadian downloads an eBook versus an American. I'd mop the floor with them.

I wouldn't buy it. I'm one of those shoppers who takes the model # off a big ticket item and searches the 'net for how it is priced elsewhere.

If I figure out I'm getting a raw deal I'll walk. If the sales folk push the issue I'll noisily walk. I'm going car shopping before too long, that'll be a blast.

I'd sooner watch the old CRT (or drive the rust bucket) for another five years than overpay by hundreds to thousands of dollars.

I haven't bought any camera gear in Canada for years. It's still about 30% cheaper to buy from US dealers, plus shipping, plus HST than it is to buy from the cheapest Can retailers.

It's a no brainer for those of us near the border.

Same here, I haven't bought any durable goods from Canadian retailers for three years clothing included. I buy online and shop hard or I buy in the US which I visit every couple of months. Paying 30,40, or 50% more for the same stuff!...no thank you.


Canada Post lets a lot of things through without collecting tax and duty as well.

Nothing like having something arrive at your door GST free!

They must be! My pet peeve driving Hwy16 is all those cars going to & from the Alaska ferry in the blinding snow or rain with no lights on.
And I'm seeing a LOT of newer Canadian plated ones with no DRLs. Either disabled or they were US imports that MVB didn't do their job on.
