For some reason though, I thought certain religious and government groups were opposed of this...or am I thinking of something else?

No you are thinking of the same thing. Religious groups had a problem with this since prior to this breakthrough, the main source of stem cells was from after birth and umbilical cords. For some reason they had a problem with this on some sort of ethical level and condemned it and was suppressed under the Bush administration. I never personally understood the problem since these things were usually just thrown out anyways and could be put to such good use.
This new technique looks like it could solve one more hurdle in reducing the risk of cancerous cells which just increases the possibility we could soon see some major breakthroughs.

Ah ok. Makes me wonder if more breakthroughs are found and discovered, that the government will ignore it or "pretend to listen" but still turn it down.

Kind of makes me feel sick. If something is found to help and save lives, wouldn't that be better than then whatever these people are protesting against.

I also see the problem with gay marriage. Just because its YOUR belief, doesn't mean it should effects other who don't.

This is a good thing as long as the government does not try and regulate it or fund it for that matter.

I think you missed the entire point of why it's important. Typically stem cell research comes from cells used from an aborted fetus. This breakthrough allows the researchers to take cells off a normal adult and revert them back to the stem cell stage thus eliminating the need to kill fetal tissue to get cells.

If that was the case then there never would have been a problem. Cords were one method later used that was a step forward in the right direction. Most methods even today still use fetal cells from an aborted embryo.
