Instead of hitting a string of water-filled garbage cans, the cannonball passed over the barrels, went straight through a protective cinderblock wall and skipped off the hill behind it, said Alameda County Sheriff's Department spokesman J.D. Nelson.

Well there's your problem!

I have to admit that's quite impressive that the cannonball could go through a cinder block wall, bounce off a hill and still have enough momentum to sail through the air, go through a house, bounce down a street and through a mini-van. I think the CF should abandon the Bofors 57mm on the CPFs and go back to the 18 pound cannons. :D

With all the crazy shit that goes on in this show it's amazing there haven't been quite a few more episodes of errant objects landing somewhere other than the intended target.

Yeah I agree.

I can't really fault them for an insane bounce.

Wouldn't mind seeing their reactions to this though.

I would love to see the uncut footage :D

I was in San Francisco when this happened. It was apparently fairly close to a neighborhood which bothered and surprised the locals. It was quite a shot and traveled through lots of hard objects before stopping. Not sure what was showed outside of SF but the guys went to every house and personally apologized and promised to make good on all repairs.

R=UP
THAT is awesome.
And to be honest, I would have been disappointed if they hadn't done that, because I think they are genuine and honorable people, who admit their mistakes and make up when they fuck up.

This was an honest fuck up that might have been anticipated, but wasn't.

I love them even more now.

Thanks for reminding me about this, a couple more videos of the incident, unfortunately I couldn't find anything from Adam or Jamie, but still a great story.

'MythBusters' Apologize for Cannonball Accident

Okay, I spent a bit more time and managed to find their apology, the video is at the end of the story below.

Is it me, or does that seem like a really big cannon? Maybe I'm just too familiar with what they used at sea.

Myth confirmed.

A cinderblock wall is not equivalent to a castle wall.

This was a bomb range and was close enough to houses to do this. I'd hate to live in those houses. Must be a stressed out bunch living there. Bet it's not an upper class neighborhood, or the range would have been shut down long ago. "Ooooo, Biffy goes off his caviar every time the let off one of those things. Can't have that."

I'm sure the show will pay for any material damages... no problem there.

I'm also sure that less than an hour after the accident, the slime of the earth (lawyers), were knocking on doors in the neighborhood, telling them they could sue for "emotional distress" and a list of other ailments they may (or not) have. "Don't worry, it will never get to court, they have insurance, they will settle... free money, minus my cut. You just need to declare that, since the accident, you have headaches/nightmares/panic attacks, or that you are scared to go back into your house."

Of course, the MythBusters aren't the only responsible party here. This was done on a bomb range, with their authorization and under their supervision.
