The OP article says a California company was previously the lowest bidder. I can’t find any independent source indicating that the Canadian company Kprime was lower.

Gonna take a wild guess and assume that some of this is being caused by a really stupid austerity requirement, shared and imposed over the years by BOTH parties, to go with the lowest bidder even when it doesn't make any fucking sense at all to do so. Canadian governments - go with gold plated items when it suits them, or when no one's paying attention to what they're up to, but then choose the Beverly Hillbillies jalopy on other things in order to project an image of fiscal "restraint & responsibility". Oi, our politicians.

Probably part of diplomacy, trying to lower tensions between the 2 countries

Wow dude, you'll make any excuse for Prince Groper's bullshit, won't you.

Yep, let's kiss the ass of a govt that has all but admitted complicity in Canada's fentanyl crisis, sent us absolute SHIT PPE in return for the top quality stuff we sent them and even goes so far as to interfere in Canadian's freedoms, re: the Pride Parade that was pressured to reneg on the offer to let pro-Honk Kong independence demonstrators join their parade.

You remind me of that half-wit Chamberlain waving a piece of paper and proclaiming "peace in our time" because he naively believed you can negotiate with extremist and authoritarian regimes.

No you’re the chamberlain with your never-ending apologies for Putins aggression and the inly ACTUAL groper in office, your beloved soon-to-be ex-president. .

We’re not kissing ass. If we were kissing ass we wouldn’t have their dear Meng in custody in the first place. Did that ever occur to you, Einstein? I doubt it.

Like everything else, you have absolutely no clue that even during the height of the Cold War, there was still trade between the west and the Soviet Union despite being enemies. It’s part of managing the tensions and overall strategy. You don’t just keep escalating and escalating and escalating with absolutely nothing no plan or thought of consequences just because you hate each other. .

I bet if it was a Montreal based firm who made a $5.4 million bid on the project, they would have got the contract though.
Yup!

Funny too, when Ottawa got their utterly crappy LRT system, they had to go with the lowest bidder for fear of being sued even though a Canadian company was in on the bidding.
But when it comes to China, the feds will take them over a lower bid from a Canadian company, presumably because said company can't sue their own govt.

I'm totally against this contract going to a Chinese company, but based on the RFP, the Calgary company's equipment didn't pass qualifying stage, which is why it wasn't awarded the contract.

What we should have done was support the Calgary company with a loan to get their equipment up to spec so it could compete on the global market and we could eventually stop buying Chinese equipment. To your point on the company's location, it's not the first time a western Canadian company has gotten screwed over because of where it is based.

Finally, on the possibility of a lawsuit from that Chinese company, you have Stephen Harper to thank for that bullshit trade agreement he signed while still in office.

Basically, there's plenty of blame to go around and it all doesn't fall on Trudeau's government, no matter how much you may dislike that fact.

Exactly because the blame goes alot farther back than just poor Justin. For example, if one Pierre Elliot Trudeau hadn't recognized the Chinese Communist Party as the legitimate Chinese gov't on the 13 Oct 1970 we wouldn't be where we are now, would we. :P

Agreed. We need to support our own to supply what we need.
