Lily, I totally agree that this guy is a first class wanker. I believe in the law and I also believe that due process is an integral part of our democracy.
Once I stop believing that I could not do what I do and be comfortable with myself.

You couldn't do what this cop did and still be comfortable with yourself.

I don't believe for a minute this is the first time he drove while under the influence... the odds of that are too high to be considered.

The thing that separates us from Iran or some other piss pot country is that no matter how heinous or distasteful the crime is, all persons get equal treatment in regards to the law. I would have loved to beat the crap out of a few kiddy diddlers or wife beaters that I've had the pleasure of dealing with but that just makes me as reprehensible as them.

Well... maybe not quite.... 8)

I have no time for this RCMP loser, driving drunk with his kids then killing an innocent guy on a bike, but it's my view that this piece of crap is no different than the other pieces of crap we have to deal with and he will get his in jail.

He probably will, because there was a death and this is VERY public. However, I do believe that while everyone is equal under the law, those that enforce the law should be held to a higher standard. At the very least, they should hold themselves to a higher standard.

Small update:

Monty Robinson was appealing his 90 day driving suspension, claiming that after he fled the scene he had 2 shots of vodka before returning.

The judge/adjudicator basically laughed at him.

I wonder though if that "doubt" will affect the ultimate charges.

No surprise there,he was so traumatized he had to have a couple shot's.
Who better than a cop would know how to get off the alcohol charges?

Tell me any civilian who gets suspended, with or without pay when they are charged with a criminal offence?

The reason Police who are charged continue to be payed is that they are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, therefore they are entitled to be paid. It's concept our democracy is built on.

Those who have been suspended probably would not agree with you seeing it as paid leave.

All I know is that if I show up, I get paid. If I'm in jail/at home, I don't. I fully support innocent until proven guilty, but if you aren't actually working, then you shouldn't be getting paid.

I don't think that a lot of the anger in this thread is necessarily anti-police as you put it EB, but rather a case of one bad apple ruining the lot. Police officers should be held to a higher standard when it comes to breaking the law. If we can't trust those who enforce it, who can we trust?

Having said that, I hope this awful example of a police officer gets what he deserves, which appears to be a long prison term.

Thankfully it's not working so far, but that was my fear from the start - that he'd get off because he created doubt.

A good lawyer might get him off, reasoanble doubt.
