Hmmm... I'm thinking the quality of the movies is going down (hence the drop at the cinema's), and, in all honesty, if I want to see a movie, I will wait till it is broadcasted on TV (over and over and over again). I can wait another 6 months for a film that was not even an idea 2 years ago...

Totally agree. With the exception of a hand full of movies the pickings at the box office were dismal this year as compared to most. Of course, just as back when CD sales were dropping, the entertainment industry doesn`t take that into consideration. Just because you spent mega bucks advertising a crap movie you made it doesn`t mean people are going to flock to the theaters to see it let alone buy it.

That aside, I kind of wonder if the fact that people have switched to streaming their movies is making an impact. I’ll rent movies online but to be honest I don’t want to “buy” and download the movie for a few reasons. One is storage space, I use an xbox and apple tv to watch movies and I don’t want to use up all my memory. Secondly is the fact that it’s digital and I have no hard copy in case something goes wrong and I lose everything on the drive. Thirdly is format, as I mentioned I have an apple tv in my entertainment room, and xbox in my living room and a DVD player in my bedroom. If I have a movie I want to watch on my xbox that I just happened to buy from apple I can’t. There probably is a way to do it but I don’t think the average Joe user has his entire house networked to that extent.

Lastly, what the f$#@ is with these prices. The same thing happened when CD’s got deep 6’d. You no longer get a DVD or a case or artwork, there’s no shipping involved, the manufacturing of the product is pretty eliminated, the store is “online” and I still have to pay the same or higher price as when I was actually getting a DVD with a case with artwork from a store which had people working in it. I don’t get that. Same goes for rentals.

Listened to a radio show about some 30s blues family band. Sold hundreds of thousands of records in their time.
They got paid $35 for the session. $35.00
And to this fucking day whoever owns the rights will sue your ass off if you download the songs and they don't get their "fair share".
Know a woman who downloads and burns movies 24-7. We visit and she invites me to grab as many as I want to watch. Sometimes I can find ONE searching her collection so I don't have to talk to her dimwit husband....

That's something else that I have gone digital with, much easier to bring my Kobo into the field than 3 or 4 books (I need that space for my dvds)

Exactly. I have a Kindle, and though it won't replace my extensive book library, it will certainly enhance it allow me to bring a number of books to sea without filling a locker.

I have a Kindle as well. Haven't used it yet other than charging the battery. Not sure I'm going to use it.

Why not donate it to some kids then? We(some expats and I) bought a dozen Greenbook ebook readers for the local Red cross orphanage. They are about $CDN 140. 2 gigs of on board memory and a 4 gig micro SD chip. No bells and whistles(anti glare B&W screen), but they can access the net, have some tablet functions and on board English and Chinese dictionary.

LOL any movies I own are old. Life of Brian, The Holy Grail and The Meaning of Life. Throw in A Bridge Too Far and there is my movie "collection".
However, the 2nd bedroom in our house is a dedicated library/study.
I just can't read e-books.

Want to read Book 5 of Game of Thrones. $20 for digital. Or $6 more for a fat hardcover physical book I can hold in my hand and give or trade when I'm done. Hell if I wait until spring it will be a fat paperback for $8 in Costco.
Sticking to $1.99 specials and freebies on the iPad.

I haven't heard anyone talk about "Library". Does anyone go there anymore?

Our local library loans ebooks. My sister and mom both use that service with their ebooks. You get them for 14 days, then it just deletes off the unit. As long as you have a valid library card you can get them.

That's because of the big six publishing companies - they think that even though distribution & manufacturing costs are essentially ZERO with e-books that you should still pay the same price as a hard copy book.

Both Amazon and Smashwords have lots of cheap e-books written by great authors. Best of all, if you buy a book from an author there, they can actually make MORE than they would have if they had gone the traditional publishing route (because both offer up to 70% royalties as opposed to the 15-30% publishing companies give).
