From my experience, a (example) 20w fluorescent light that says it's a 100w incandescent light bulb is totally untrue. I buy fluo bulbs but it's no where what they are saying on the box.
Those CFB's are really good for use in places, like stair wells, where one needs to haul out a big ladder and spend 1/2 an hour changing a bulb. They do last quite a long time.

A fair bit, actually. Haven't you ever touched one?

How many light bulbs would you have to keep on in order to heat your house?

This article makes it sound as though everybody has 5000 watts of bulbs burning in their house at one time...if they do they must have teenagers :P

How long, and how many teachers does it take to change a light bulb?

I kinda like the light that CFBs give off.
It's not as bright as regular lights but I have very good night vision.
My GF hates them but she can't see shit at night unless there's 300w of light in the living room.
(One of the reasons she needs light is that she's afraid of spiders and wants to see them before they see her.)

Besides, if I understand the logic in the article:
- since I only heat electric, it's not costing me more
- I'm saving a bunch on air-conditioning in the summer

One of the pleasures of living in a condo is I don't pay for heat, just electricity, so for us, switching to CFLs makes sense. It looks like it'll be an even bigger bonus come summer time, when our condo is quite warm (darn south facing windows).

Still stumbling about in the dark eh mtbr! Someone should try a little light in their life. I think you have fallen down too many dark stairs without your helmet on.
