The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, said 14 students and one teacher were shot and killed at an elementary school in Uvalde, in the south-west of the state, on Tuesday. The gunman’s grandmother was reportedly killed too.
Abbott said the gunman, who he named as Salvador Ramos, an 18-year-old male from Uvalde, “shot and killed horrifically, incomprehensibly, 14 students and killed a teacher … the shooter, he himself is deceased and it is believed responding officers killed him”.
Abbott also said: “It appears that two responding officers were struck by rounds, but have no serious injuries.”
Abbott said the gunman had a handgun and “may have also had a rifle”. Abbott also referred to the gunman shooting his grandmother before entering the school. The governor did not say anything further about the grandmother’s condition.
An Uvalde police spokesperson did not confirm the numbers, identities or ages of the dead as given by the governor. He did say the school “has children that are in second-, third- and fourth-grade”.

But it's hard to escape the horror and sorrow when things like this happen. Fifteen lives snuffed out. Fifteen families put through an endless hell. All because a country refuses to do even the bare minimum to try and ensure this doesn't happen anymore.
