I'm part Scot and I don't find it offensive. Mike Meyer's father is English, not Scottish, but yes, I find it offensive. If Shrek was a "squinty-eyed Chinaman" cartoon saying things like "Me wash-a da laundry, round eye" or a black cartoon with lines like "Can I shine your shoe, bro?" would that be offensive? Of course it would. So why are black jokes racist, but Scottish ones aren't? The answer is we Scots have a sense of humour and can take a joke about our sterotypes. Maybe if other groups could relax and take a joke we wouldn't need to go yelling "racism" all the time.

Actually, I've noticed more albinos(sometimes you mistake them a very fair westerner until you see the asiatic features, and for some reason their eyes are almost blue) here, or is it just that they stand out more. Hell give them pointy ears and you have yourself an elf. As for racism, it exists here, but it's more subtle in many ways. Korea has a reputation of being the most racist society in East Asia...but then again, they aren't that crazy about other Asians either.

Most of the English in the north(Yorkshire especially) have an accent that sounds to our ears like a soft Scottish burr.......damned northern monkeys, or is it damned southern fairies?

lily wrote: Thanks, RUEZ. I could have sworn it was his father - or maybe some of the lines came from him, such as "someone's going the right way for a smack bottom". Anyway, the moral of the story is imitating someones accent is not racist nor offensive. If someone finds it offensive they might want to pull the stick out of their ass. Rich Little made a fine living imitating peoples "accents" so to speak. This very funny Canadian comedian does an excellent impression of his dad who is East Indian, cracks me up every time.

belittling ANY aspect of one's culture, such as accent, is racist...it's the very definition of racism (to ridicule based on the traits of the group rather than the individual).

Yes, we Scots do so, which is exactly what I said, but if I make a "nigger" joke, it isn't any less racist just because some black folks either don't hear it or aren't bothered by it.

You're trying to compare someone mimicking an accent to someone demeaning another person because of their colour. Not much of a comparison.

Maybe this is why Sean Connery didn't even try to imitate a Russian accent when he was in The Hunt for Red October. He didn't want to offend any Russians.
