Wow X 2. Normally people don't starve themselves to death over a triviality. Psych problems indeed.

Thats one strong headed girl! Holy! Usually kids will eat when they get hungry :?

She should have been admitted to hospital and put on an IV, of course... Some people really screwed up here...

Ya, you's think that after she could barely move the parents would have taken her to the hopsital... I think we are missing a few pieces here. :|

Good god. I saw the headline and thought "Must have happened in India," because most of these kinds of strange/awful medical stories seem to come from there. But for this to happen in the developed world...

Here, there's a number you can call to get medical advice, but every time I've called it, it's been useless because it takes a half hour on hold to talk to someone for a start, and then they basically won't diagnose or reccomend anything over the phone, so you have to go in anyways. It's shocking to me that the doctors dismissed the parents concerns over the phone. But it also shocks me that the parents never took their daughter in to see anyone. Me, if I don't like what one doctor says, I'll go talk to another (in person).

It shocks me that a dentist saw fit to take it upon themselves to yank eight teeth from an eight year-old's mouth. Eight year-olds (and even much younger) do care about their appearance, and a mouth full of holes will cause them incredible anguish. I remember in grade one falling off a friend's bike, landing on my face and being too ashamed of it to go to school the next day. I was six or seven.

It shocks me that the hospital discharged her even though she wasn't eating.

Ugh. This is just too horrible all around...

i dont think the health care system is completly to blame here. at what point do the parents stop taking responsibility for the welfare of their child. i dont care what some doctor over the phone says, if a kid isn't eating and looked as bad as they did then you pack her up and put her in the car and take her to the hospital to be hooked up to an IV.

Thats why I have a feeling there is a case for abuse here, I mean if I was a parent and the doctor said "Lets just pull all her teeth" you can bet my answer wouldnt be yes.

Holy shit, you are right, there has got to be more to this story than meets the eye. And parent responsibility--she lost 1/3 of her body mass. I don't care if they were told not to bring her in!

Absolutely agreed. She was EIGHT YEARS OLD. You pick her up and take her in. The lame assed excuse that "doctors said not to bring her in" does NOT fly with me. When you're standing there looking at your child, KNOWING full bloody well that there's something wrong, you bring them in and MAKE someone help them. Period.

The incompetance lies with the parents on this one. They stood there and watched that little girl die and are now trying to shift the blame on the system. Bullshit.

You need to correct that. Its another example of fine public health care after it's been fixed by Margaret Thatcher or someone else of her ilk!

missing parts aside, the parents should be put under the microscope, they WATCHED THEIR CHILD DIE, force feed the damn kid, trick the kid to eat, there is always something that can be done. I would NEVER sit there and say 'oh ok baby, if you don't want to eat, that's ok' good gawd no, CHILD YOU EAT OR I WILL MAKE YOU EAT!
