Good example of punching down if there ever was one.

Quote:
Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

If you drive a car, I'll tax the street
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet

Taxman!
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

Don't ask me what I want it for
If you don't want to pay some more
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

And you're working for no one but me
Taxman!

So instead of giving staff 20% off of retail they get to buy it 'on sale' like the regular public.

Dentist give their employees free or low cost dental care as a perk. Guess that is gone too.

I find it ridiculous and petty to see employee discounts, whether in the form of % off goods or services provided by their employer or as a free meal while on shift (in the case of restaurant industry staff), being treated as a taxable benefit.

It's just a tax grab against people who work in the service industry and are generally in the lower end of the pay scale. I'm betting those that came up with this one never once worked in the service industry.

What's next? Targeting seniors who take advantage of "senior discounts" and "senior rates" that are offered by many stores and services?

So, if I buy a car at 'Employee Discount' pricing, does that apply to me?

No one is, which is why L'il Potato's people are beating a hasty retreat on the idea. Probable though they'll sneak something in elsewhere in the byzantine maze of the tax code to make up for it. Fuckers never miss a beat.

As they clearly explained to the press yesterday, this was not the government or the Liberals pulling this. It was the scumbags within the CRA's own initiative.
The gov't didn't "retreat" it told them to fuck off. And now let's see if they axe the dickheads responsible.

The entire CRA has the attitude that they can interpret the rules any way they want, to their advantage.

So they say now. If it weren't for the opposition and media bringing it to attention it would have slid through with no one, except the people getting ripped off on their discounts and tax returns, being any wiser.

Not so they say.
The original announcement wasn't made by an MP.
It was from a CRA mandarin.

The bureaucracy is capable of endless stupid decisions.

A Liberal MP, Marco Mendicino, has come to defend the policy on the CBC.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/revenue ... -1.4348076

Quote:
During an appearance before the House of Commons finance committee late last month, Littler raised issues with the folio's new wording. He said Liberal MP Kamal Khera, the parliamentary secretary to the national revenue minister, and others on the committee, weren't even aware such a major change was coming, even though CRA announced the change last fall.

Asleep at the wheel.
