It's not the rip-offs that worry me about handing over essential services to the invisible hand, it's the quality of service. When profit, not service, becomes the motive, the one will benefit at the expense of the other.

That's totally untrue. The 'invisible hand' is proven to be true. That's a very common mistake to think of economy as a zero sum game.
