Public monopolies aren't anywhere near as bad as private ones, simply because the government tends to legislate the hell out of them and try to ensure everyone gets roughly the same treatment. I have no problem with public monopolies on essential services like power, water and electricity, as Enron-like rip-offs are far less likely to occur.
It's not the rip-offs that worry me about handing over essential services to the invisible hand, it's the quality of service. When profit, not service, becomes the motive, the one will benefit at the expense of the other.
