What do you want from the Daily Slime? Sure, sure, that's it, we're going to be spending long periods foraging in the water. Actually, as Caleb has pointed out, by the time we live in a "water world" the oceans will be so acidic from dissolved CO2, there won't be much life there to forage for.

Oh dear Andy. What will you do with your gills in your acid ocean?

I assume you know there have been periods when the earth had CO2 in the atmosphere many times what we're seeing today.

Perhaps you'll do as good as the life that teemed in the oceans during those periods.

Perhaps you'll survive.

You don't really seem to be getting this whole "evolution" thing, you see creatures adapt to their environments over periods of millions of years through natural selection and mutation. This doesn't mean that if we chuck you off of a cliff with a rocky bottom you are all of a sudden going to sprout wings and fly away. In all likelihood, you would end up as a pulverized mess of blood and bones at the bottom of the cliff.

Evolution takes time which can be a good thing I suppose.

Thanks Del, I get that, but that's the real world.

I thought the way Prog logic, magic-think worked for you guys was you believe a thing and then it becomes true. Perhaps it's like in Peter Pan. Perhaps you're just not believing hard enough in your acid ocean catastrophe, and the power of the gill. :P ROTFL

How about genetic manipulation to speed things up.

Genetic engineering is currently in its early days. Think of how aircraft were in 1915. It was a new technology and while it was promising most people thought little of it. Forty years later it was pervasive.

Give genetic engineering forty years and all sorts of nightmares and blessings will become possible.

Cancer and genetic diseases may well be removed from humanity.

But this article raises the notion that someone might want purpose created people. Like wouldn't it be handy if you were a kelp harvesting company and you could get workers created for you who had webbed feet so they could work better at sea?

Or wings for people who deliver stuff for Amazon?

& etc.

Evolution may end up being something we do on demand.

Yep. Pretty silly idea that we'll be "foraging" in the seas with bare feet and hands. If society has devolved so much that there will only be a few humans foraging around the littoral zones, we're probably done for anyway.
